Color copying and printing can get expensive, but now these technologies are within your reach, even if you're on a tight budget. The Hewlett-Packard CopyJet includes a high-impact color/monochrome printer in the same package as a color copier. The unit prints and copies on plain paper at 300 dots per inch for color copies and 600x300dpi for monochrome. Costs average seven cents per plain-paper color copy at 15 percent ink coverage.
Color documents can print at 1.5 pages per minute, while documents with mixed text and color print at 3ppm. Monochrome text prints at 7ppm. The unit can handle originals up to 8.5 by 14 inches. The input tray holds 180 sheets of letter, legal and A4 media. The unit copies on plain, ink jet and glossy paper, as well as transparency film. It produces up to four monochrome copies per minute and one color copy per minute.

Priced under $500, the Brother WL-660 6ppm, 600dpi desktop laser printer proves that high resolution doesn't have to cost a bundle. The printer's microfine toner system splits consumables into two units. The toner cartridge, which prints about 3,000 pages, costs $39.95, while the drum unit, with a 17,000-page life, costs $199.95.
The WL-660 avoids jams with a straight paper path. Standard features include 21 TrueType-compatible fonts and EPA Energy Star compliance. The PowerSave Mode lets you set a time--from 5 to 65 minutes--when the printer enters sleep mode. With the Reprint Mode, you can reprint the last printed page at the touch of a button. You can also print out a Setting Status Page, which itemizes the printer's settings.
Brother's automatic data compression reduces a file's size without losing data.
